RDX ‘freely’ available

HYDERABAD: Sounding an ominous note, additional commissioner of police (crime and SiT) Rajeev Trivedi on Thursday said that explosives were ‘freely’ available in Hyderabad and anybody wanting to procure them could easily do so.
Trivedi’s statements came in response to a query whether the RDX used in the Mumbai 7/11 blasts could have been routed through Hyderabad. On being pressed to elucidate by mediapersons, Trivedi clarified: “i don’t mean that explosives are available in each bylane, but if you want it you will get it.” \
He, however, did not want to categorically state that the RDX from Hyderabad had snaked its way to Mumbai. in fact, he denied that any knowledge of reports suggesting this.
Even as he tried hard to deny that the Hyderabad police had picked up anyone in connection with the latest Mumbai blasts, Trivedi said that some people connected to terrorist organisations were absconding from Hyderabad and the cops were looking for them.
He, however, did not provide details of those missing but said that a discreet watch was being kept on persons suspected to have links with terrorists and who were not underground.
He said that the police were aware of the new outfit through which the banned Students islamic Movement of india (Simi) were operating.

Work on highway stretch goes at a snail’s pace

HYDERABAD: The work on the 23.4 km-stretch on Hyderabad-Bangalore National Highway (NH 7) from Aramgarh junction near Rajendranagar to the international airport at Shamshabad has fallen behind schedule.
The Rs 105-crore project of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was scheduled to be completed in 12 months, but has been ‘in the process’ for the last three years.
it was envisaged to provide faster connectivity to Bangalore from the city. The contract for the work was first given to Maharia and Company three years ago.
After one and half years, the contract with the company was terminated after it was found that the company had submitted fraudulent bank guarantee. By that time, the company had completed Rs 35-crore-worth works.
After a gap of one year, the work was awarded to another company, M B Patil Constructions, at a project cost of Rs 70 crore. But the work by the new company too went behind the schedule for the past six months.
NHAI officials themselves are in doubt now whether the deadline of December 2006 to complete the work will be met. if rapid progress is not made within the next two months, the contract may be terminated and the work awarded to another company, an NHAI official said.
The company is said to be still in the process of mobilising crushers and hot mix plants. As per the agreement between the NHAI and the company, the NHAI reserves the right to terminate the contract at any point, if it is not satisfied with the pace of the work.
While the project has been marred by delays, there has been cost escalation, particularly for land acquisition along the highway.
“There are some religious structures, including mosques and graveyards on the highway. We have written to the state government seeking permission to relocate them,” said i G Reddy, NHAI general manager and project director.

The 10th seed Shelly Kitchen cut to size the error-prone indian with a 9-4 9-1 7-9 9-4 verdict, to book her place in the last 16 of the championship. “She is a good player and i failed to keep the ball going. The unforced errors cost me the match,” commented Joshna.

All eyes on Prabhas

No matter what the remake syndrome doesn’t look like stopping.
After a series of movies from Tamil, a Kannada remake has now gone on to the floors.
The Kannada blockbuster Jogi’s remake in Telugu with V V Vinayak wielding the megaphone and Prabhas in the lead has begun to shoot.
The shoot has been going on quietly for the last four or five days in Hyderabad.
All eyes have been on Prabhas as his last movie Pournami did not do well at the box office.
Prabhas is currently also doing Dil Raju’s Munna.
it is interesting to note that Prabhas has taken up Jogi even before Munna is fully complete. The surprise here stems from the fact that his Jogi character requires him to have a long hair.
So Prabhas may have to settle for an uncomfortable wig.
But Jogi will be a powerful character for him.
it also stars the hot and happening Nayantra as the heroine.
Produced by Eeshwari Arts, Jogi will not be an absolute copy of the Kannada blockbuster. Vinayak has reworked the script to suit the Telugu taste.

Court stops work around Hyderabad palace

Court stops work around Hyderabad palace
Hyderabad, July 4 (iANS) The Andhra Pradesh High Court Tuesday stopped the ongoing construction work around the Hyderabad palace, the seat of the erstwhile Nizams, after it was told of the threat posed to the 250-year-old monument.
The court order to stop work for a week at the splendid Chowmahalla Palace comes a day after a team of officials visited the palace and inspected the artefacts and the illegal construction activity around it as per the court order.
Justice J.S. Singhvi and Sitapathi issued the orders while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Vasanta Sobha, a conservation architect.
Sobha, in her petition, prayed for declaring the 200-year-old former British Residency, which now houses a college, as a national protected monument. However, during the hearing the court was informed about the threat to vintage cars and other artefacts lying at Chowmahalla palace and the construction activity around it.
The construction activity poses a threat to the fabulous palace, which was thrown open to the public last year after the first phase of the conservation project.
Chowmahalla, a symbol of French and islamic architecture and the seat of the rulers of the former princely state of Hyderabad, is located just 300 metres west of Charminar, the symbol of Hyderabad in the walled quarter.
During the 19th century, the palace was the very heart of Hyderabad and the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty (1724-1948).
Once spread over 45 acres with sprawling gardens and open space, the palace has been left with only 12 acres. Even this is under threat from encroachers, with new constructions coming up close to the boundary wall and protruding into the palace premises.
On a direction from the court, Hyderabad district collector R.V. Chandravadan and Director of Archaeology and Museums J. Kedareswari visited Chowmohalla and Chiran palaces Monday to inspect the valuable artefacts.
The team had to face some resistance from security personnel posted there, who argued that it was the Nizam’s private property. The team could not have access to many artefacts including buggies, weapons and crockery. The palace officials told them that the keys of the storehouses where the artefacts were lying were not available.
in the absence of an inventory, the two officials were at loss to cross check what was originally present and was now missing. They merely asked the palace staff to submit the inventory and arrange the keys in three days.
The visit by the team brought into focus the poor shape in which the vintage cars and other memorabilia have been kept at the palace.
The vintage cars like a Rolls-Royce, Ford, Fiat and Buick were stashed in a rundown tiled garage inside the Chiran palace, located in the sprawling Kasu Brahmanand Reddy Park in the posh Jubliee Hills neighbourhood.
The princely state of Hyderabad was merged into the indian Union in September 1948 following the ‘police action’, or operation by the indian Army.
Prince Mukarram Jah Bahadur, the successor and grandson of last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, lives in Turkey.
